Choose to be a golden vessel
"But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also [utensils] of wood and earthenware, and some for honorable and noble [use] and some for menial and ignoble [use]." (2 Timothy 2:20 AMP)
In every household, there are items or instruments that are considered to be special, hence they are handled and used specially. For example, some things are only used on special days or to entertain a special guest.
There are also items that are just seen as normal or regular. Such items are neither treated with special care nor used for special purposes.
It is interesting to know that the same thing applies in the great household of God. Everyone who is born-again is a vessel in God's household-- a vessel with which God wants to fulfill His agenda on earth.
But unlike a human household, where the importance or value of a vessel entirely depends on the value judgement of its owner, the importance or value of the vessels in God's household is determined by the vessels themselves. That is, as a believer, you get to decide how valuable and useful you will be to God.
In our opening text, we see from God's word that all the vessels (that is, believers) in the household of God are generally grouped into two categories:
1. The gold and silver category-- Those that are for honourable and noble use.
2. The wood and earthenware (or clay) category-- Those that are for menial and ignoble use.
We would have thought that God, in His sovereignty, is the one who places a believer in either of the two categories. But the verse that follows helps us to see that being in the first category is not by divine allocation. It is by the choice of individuals.
"So whoever cleanses himself [from what is ignoble and unclean, who separates himself from contact with contaminating and corrupting influences] will [then himself] be a vessel set apart and used for honorable and noble purposes, consecrated and profitable to the Master, fit and ready for any good work." (2 Timothy 2:21 AMP).
WHOEVER cleanses himself or herself, irrespective of race, location, academic qualification, or any other factor, will be a vessel unto honour in the household of faith, through whom God is going to do great and mighty things.
Apostle Peter made a similar statement. He said "In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him." (Acts 10:34-35).
God has no favourites. It is up to each one of us to live a holy and consecrated life before God with the help of the Holy Spirit, thereby becoming a golden vessel, used by God for honourable and noble purposes on the earth.
