No visible signs; just the Word.
Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way. (John 4:50 KJV)
Many people have adopted the cliché that says, "seeing is believing". That is, they will not believe something is true or real unless they can relate with it with their physical senses. But we as believers shouldn't be like that.
Yes, thank God for spectacular signs, visions and dreams, words of wisdom and knowledge. It's always interesting to have them. But for you to move on to higher levels of spiritual maturity, you must learn to simply believe and hold on persistently to what you see written in the scriptures, without any 'special' sign or feeling. That's when you begin to operate in the realm of great faith.
In our opening text, the man simply believed the word Jesus spoke to Him, and it was so. In another story in Matthew 8:5-10;13, we see a man who understood that the Word was all he needed. Jesus called it "great faith".
God wants us to get to, and stay in the place where we see a verse or passage in the Bible that addresses our situation, and we simply believe it, act on it, and hold on to it, regardless of outward circumstances.
For instance, His Word says we are healed by His stripes (1Peter 2:24). Believe and hold on to this if sickness comes knocking on your door. His Word also says, "Be anxious for nothing..." (Philippians 4:6 KJV). Believe and act on this if worry or anxiety tries to occupy your mind.
This is one key to living the overcomer's life. For we walk by faith (in the Word), and not by sight (2Corinthians 5:7).
